The average American breathes 3,400 gallons of air each day, making ambient air pollution a major environmental problem. Indoor air quality is one of the EPA’s top five environmental risks to public health. 87 percent of American homeowners are not aware that pollution may be worse inside their homes than outdoors. Common indoor air pollutants include dust mites, pollen, mold, radon, carbon monoxide, excessive carbon dioxide, and other chemical fumes.
Indoor air pollution is two to five times worse (sometimes a 100x worse) than the air outdoors. Air pollution contributes to lung disease, respiratory tract infections, asthma and lung cancer. The largest reductions in indoor air pollution can be achieved by switching from solid fuels (biomass, coal) to cleaner and more efficient fuels and energy technologies. Indoor air pollution is a problem for all types of homes, whether in a dense urban city or a rural town.
Nearly 2 million people die prematurely from illness attributable to indoor air pollution from household solid fuel use. The three most important methods of improving indoor air quality are source removal, air cleaning, and increased ventilation. Controlling exposure to indoor allergens and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) could prevent 65 percent of asthma cases among elementary school-age children.
Jimy Thorpe moved to Bay County, Florida from Santa Cruz, Bolivia when he was eight years old. Life was so different here in America…the people, the food, the language, the way of life. But Jimy loved Panama City Beach, where his family lived since coming here. He grew up in Panama City Beach and graduated from Bay High in the spring of 1985. That fall he joined the armed forces, and served in the U.S. Army for seven years. Aftewards, Jimy attended Haney Vo-Tech Institute and received his AC certificate, becoming an Air Conditioning Contractor in 2002. In 2003, Jimy opened the doors of A Superior Air Conditioning.
A Superior works with residential customers, performing maintenance, service work and system replacements. The company also does commercial work which includes walk-in coolers, freezers and ice machines. New construction work consists of designing duct work and installing equipment. “It’s a great feeling, being a part of the finished product,” smiles Jimy.
Why the air conditioning business? “I have always enjoyed helping people,” Jimy says. “Especially when you can give good news to a customer, or provide a service like they’ve never experienced. It’s a special feeling.” Jimy calls A Superior a Relationship Business. “Truly, it begins with the employees working at A Superior,” he explains. “I request that each employee has an understanding of the company operations, and an understanding of why it is so important to feel passionate about their work. This type of service to our customers shows value, which in turn builds trust. As customers see that we are a company of quality, they will continue to refer us to others in need of the services rendered at A Superior.” Jimy is proud that A Superior worked on the first Platinum Leed (leadership, energy, environmental, design) residential house in Bay County, as well as the first commercial Leed building, the Panama City Beach Library.
Jimy has been serving the community for ten years, has been an active member of the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce for four years, and takes an active role as a member of the Emerald Coast Rotary and the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. Five words that describe Jimy Thorpe would be ambitious, happy, vibrant, passionate, and down-to-earth. (Well, that’s actually seven words, but you get the gist!) This “glass is half full” man’s favorite pastime was once jumping from air planes. These days he loves playing on the beach with his family, including Marta, daughter Sophia and three sons, Mako, Cruz and Leo.
