Maintenance, Repairs and Service

Do you notice how things seem to break when you need them the most? Your furnace breaking during the one week of snow that we get in Portland or your AC breaking on one of those three 100 degree days we have in Portland? The old adage, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure certainly holds true for your heating and cooling system.

Your car is something that is constantly in front of you so it is easy to remember to do oil changes or to know if something isn’t working properly. Your heating and air conditioning system is often behind closed doors, set the thermostat and forget it, but the reality is that it should be on the front of every homeowners mind. If you compare a furnace to a car you can understand how vital annual maintenance is on your furnace.

The average furnace runs for around 3,000 hours per year, now imagine your car driving for 3,000 hours a year at an average of 30 miles per hour. That’s 90,000 mile per year of use on your furnace!!! Even a 30,000 mile service on a car is very vital and you wouldn’t go 90,000 miles without changing the oil would you?

A furnace or air conditioner goes through a lot more wear and use than most people realize. Simple things like changing air filters, which cost about 1/3rd the price of an oil change can help improve your heating and cooling bills and increase the longevity of your furnace.

Sky Heating has maintenance contracts that fit your needs. We schedule Furnace maintenance in the fall before the real cold hits, and we schedule Air Conditioner maintenance in the spring before those hot summer days. Each service is 129.95 but if you have a yearly maintenance contract with us we give a 5% discount if your furnace or air conditioner break and we also give priority service, so if you have friends visiting from out of town or guests coming over for dinner we can get your house back to a comfortable level for you.

Our maintenances include but are not limited to. Cleaning cabinets, testing electrical connections, inspecting all functioning parts, adjusting burners and blowers for optimal efficiency, checking the heat exchanger, inducer motor and venting for leaks that could spill harmful carbon monoxide into your home, changing filters if needed, testing the thermostat, checking pressures and temperatures, testing the compressor and capacitors, checking for refrigeration leaks and more.

Maintenance is the key to ensuring that your system is operating at peak efficiency, saving you money, keeping you comfortable and most importantly staying trouble free by ensuring longevity. Call us today to get started on an annual maintenance contract to enjoy all the benefits listed above.

Geothermal Heating

| HEATING & COOLING EQUIPMENT | WATER HEATERS | DUCTLESS SYSTEMS | GEOTHERMAL | ACCESSORIES | Ground Source or Geothermal heat pumps use the earth to transfer energy between your house and the ground making for an efficient heating and cooling system. Like a conventional heat pump a Geo system will heat your house in the winter time at extremely efficient rates and cool your house in the summer for next to nothing. Because a Geothermal system is transferring instead of creating energy it is more efficient than a gas furnace and because it transfers energy into the ground which stays around 50-55 degrees year round it is more efficient than a conventional heat pump who’s efficiency and capacity change as the outdoor temperature changes.

Geothermal systems currently qualify for a federal tax credit that encompasses 30% of the installed cost and are also available for Oregon Department of Energy Tax credits that range from $600 to $1,200 depending on your situation as well as up to $2,400 from most PUD's or $200 from PGE and $250-$450 from the Energy Trust of Oregon. Geothermal heat pumps can save 60% of your heating and cooling costs vs a gas furnace and air conditioner or about 40% of your heating and cooling costs vs a high efficiency heat pump.

Most geothermal systems will also provide you with about a third to half of your water heating needs while heating and cooling your home. This could save you another$100-$300 per year in utilities. The excavation needed may be a significant portion of the costs associated with the system as well as the size and scope of the system, but Sky Heating will also get this setup for you if needed.

A geothermal system consists of a heat exchanger(the 2,000 to 6,000 feet of piping buried or drilled into the ground), the ductwork (needed for most systems), and the indoor unit (just like a furnace or an air handler). While putting 2,000+ feet of pipe in the ground is a less expensive option, if this much space is not available we can drill 200 foot wells into the ground and run piping through the wells or drill horizontally under the house or use the WaterFurnace Hyperloop product. We have options for all lot sizes ranging from 50X100(5,000 sq foot city size lot) to houses on acreage.

Geothermal systems can be installed in almost any house but costs are highly variable. Call us at Sky Heating and Air Conditioning for more information for a geothermal site visit. Even if geothermal isn’t for you, we have other options we can look at. Geothermal systems are also great for floating homes and houseboats or homes located on lakes. A house like a floating home is above water which is an even better transfer of energy than the earth and with a floating home there is no noisy outdoor unit to deal with when minimal dock space is available.

Sky Heating is proud to announce that we now offer Duct Cleaning! We bought a top of the line negative air duct cleaning system.  Mitsubishi electric is the ultimate in home comfort and reliability. From a single zone to heat or cool that spot that your existing heating and cooling system can't take care of to a full house or commercial building. Mitsubishi electric has systems from 6K BTU's(1/2 ton) up to 4 ton and beyond systems.

Most new cars today come with dual climate or quad climate control standard so why doesn't your house which costs 10X that! A conventional gas furnace and air conditioner are single zone. If you only need to heat or cool your bedroom your system will waste energy and heat the whole house. This is the "old" way of heating and cooling. With Mitsubishi Electrics Mr. Slim series you only heat or cool the rooms you need... while doing it more efficiently!

How does Mr. Slim by Mitsubishi do this? They use an invertor driven compressor. While a conventional system has one or two speeds the Mr. Slim system is fully variable and will adjust to your needs and the amount of energy the house needs. This makes for a low energy system that will always adapt. Its a lot like a gas pedal on the car, conventional systems are either full throttle or off while your efficient Mitsubishi system slowly accelerates and then runs at an efficient cruise control level to maintain temperature.

Is your current heating or air conditioner system to loud? Then the Mr. Slim ductless mini split is for you! Conventional systems air conditioners or heat pumps run anywhere from 68 to 82 decibels while Mr. Slim systems run as little as 46 decibels!
